Samantha Smith
Samantha Smith lives in Melbourne, Victoria with her three junior co-authors, an adopted cat, nine-hundred-and-ninety-seven compost worms, and a friendly Blue Banded Bee. Her passion for eco-storytelling is reflected in her doctoral research, which explored methods for encouraging positive environmental habits in young people.
A member of the Australian Society of Authors, the CBCA and the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), Samantha is a CYA judge, an Author Pen Pal and an Author Ambassador for the Life's Little Treasures 'Little Reader's Read-a-thon'.
Her debut picture book, Harriet's Hungry Worms - inspired by her overactive compost bin and some adventurous worms - was published by EK Books in 2023. The book features inventive illustrations by Melissa Johns, who cleverly incorporates recycled materials into her artwork, providing a perfect springboard for creative workshops and environmental discussions.
Harriet's Hungry Worms has already garnered significant international recognition, winning the NYC Big Book Award (Picture Books: Ages 4-8) and earning a spot on the 2024 Rubery Book Awards shortlist in the Children and YA category. The Rubery judges praised it as "a clever combination of factual information, vivid and fascinating illustrations and, above all, a story that will draw children in."
Samantha's unique blend of academic insight and storytelling has led to a second picture book contract with EK Books, continuing her mission to foster environmental awareness in young readers through engaging narratives. Her background in sustainability research allows her to create sessions that are both entertaining and educational.
An experienced presenter, Samantha regularly visits schools, festivals, libraries and early learning centers, engaging audiences with her dynamic and interactive approach. Her interactive sessions combine storytelling, hands-on activities, and plenty of fun - leaving students excited about writing and making their own positive impact on the planet. She tailors her presentations to suit different age groups, from early years to upper primary.
I offer a range of engaging presentations that can be tailored to suit your specific needs, curriculum focus, and time constraints. Sessions typically run for 30 minutes for ELC/Kinder/Prep and 45-60 minutes for older age groups, but can be adjusted. I'm also happy to discuss custom presentations to align with your learning objectives.
