BRIAN FALKNER
BrianFalkner

About Brian
Brian is a highly sought -after speaker in schools, and at literary festivals and conferences. His infectious enthusiasm, humour and energy make every appearance a popular and memorable one.
His talks cover everything from tips for budding writers, to inspiration for reluctant readers, to small drops of wisdom on life, the universe and everything in between, in a visual, irreverent and highly entertaining way.
His workshops provide practical guidance for student writers on the process of creating a story, and his Story Sports™ Tournaments will get the most reluctant writers champing at the bit to write!

Age Range
Brian’s presentations and workshops are aimed at children from 8-13 years old, although can be modified slightly to suit a younger, or older audience.
Brian would prefer not to talk to a mixed audience of very little children and older students, as it is difficult to pitch the talk at two different levels simultaneously. However he realises that this can be an issue in smaller rural schools, and will always do his best!

Prepared Programme
Brian is flexible and accommodating in what he will do to meet a school's requirements; and he has developed a programme based on his experiences in schools which seems to work well.
This consists of a presentation, a competition, and writing workshops.
In addition to this, Brian can run an inter-class, or inter-school competition called Story Sports™.

Teacher Comments

Brian Falkner was absolutely fantastic today. We were all in stitches and the staff had tears of laughter. I would recommend him to Years 5-7 and junior secondary. The boys loved him.

Thanks for the opportunity to have him, he was terrific and has added to a great Book Week at our school.

St. Andrew’s, Ferny Grove, August, Book Week, 2010.

He was fabulous. Students were engaged in his tales, and his story arc method workshopped a fairytale by the entire year level was something else to see. Very polished presentation that connected with our kids.

Kris Paterson – Head of Library Services, Ivanhoe Grammar, Victoria

His presentations are really lively and entertaining but get important messages about reading and writing, but also life, across. They are varied, humorous and move a good speed. He has lots of variety and really keeps the children interested the whole time. Everyone loved the presentations including staff here in both secondary and primary, even the ones that are quite hard to please. He had eight-year-old children sitting for 90 minutes without anyone messing around. No one wanted him to finish.

Fantastic visit. We had our school hall packed - nearly 500 students, and students & staff came away from the visit abuzz. The school library has been denuded of all Brian's books, and teachers are fighting each other for my personal copies to read aloud to their classes. We'd love to have you back.

Sue Jane, Teacher - Raroa Intermediate - Johnsonville, Wellington, New Zealand

Brian visited our school from March 5-8, 2008 and his visit was a resounding success. We average about four international author visits each school year and Brian’s work with our grade 3, 4 and 5 students stands out. Kids were hooked, as the hundreds of students showing up for the recess time Coca Cola tasting contest and the Story Sports final showed.

Wouter Laleman, Librarian - American School in Japan - Tokyo, Japan

Brian delivered a fantastic programme for our students and I believe they gained tremendously in a very short span of time. His knowledge, sense of humour and enthusiasm combine to be a winning combination. He is well prepared, has great activities and is a great role model for budding authors.

Darren Kerr, Teacher - Masterton Intermediate School - Masterton, New Zealand

The staff were blown away - what a successful formula you have! They felt it related so well to their literacy programmes and was delivered in such an interesting and motivating manner. For some it has ignited their programme!! They certainly got plenty of ideas which they can use in a variety of ways. We had a line of students clamouring for your books at lunchtime - they were very excited!! Our reserve list is now extensive. I was also approached by several parents who have reluctant readers, mainly boys, who went home fizzing about meeting you and told them all about your presentation. They were very impressed, these students don't usually have much to say. Of course Tara is still grinning from ear to ear and we all look forward to reading her name in one of your new books. Thanks so much for all the time and effort you put into these presentations, we feel very lucky to have had the benefit of your expertise.

Your talk was positively inspirational and your rapport with students exceptional. This author visit will be savoured for a long time to come. I’m sure everyone has been encouraged to reach for the stars.

Teacher - Waimauku School - Waimauku, New Zealand

Teachers were very impressed. Children loved him. I have been here 13 years and would have to say the best author visit as yet.

Teacher - Dargaville Primary School - Dargaville, New Zealand

Brian’s engaging presentation has inspired many of our students to write their own original stories with the dream to become a published author.
